There is no universal coverage amount. A useful estimate starts with the financial responsibilities that would remain after a death and subtracts resources already available for those responsibilities.
A Needs-Based Framework
- Income replacement: how much support and for how many years?
- Housing: mortgage, rent, taxes, insurance, and maintenance.
- Debts: loans and obligations survivors would need to address.
- Childcare and household labor: including the economic value of a stay-at-home parent.
- Education: only if this is part of the family’s goal.
- Final expenses: funeral, medical, and administrative costs.
- Existing resources: savings, existing insurance, and assets intended for survivors.
Why a Salary Multiple Is Only a Starting Point
Rules such as “ten times income” are quick estimates, but they may overlook a nonworking parent, special-needs planning, existing assets, a short mortgage, or a longer dependency period.
Affordability Matters
A policy that cannot be maintained may not solve the intended problem. Compare the ideal need with a premium that remains realistic, and review coverage after major life changes.
