Term and permanent life insurance can both provide a death benefit, but they are built for different timelines, budgets, and objectives.

Term Life Insurance

Term coverage is purchased for a defined period, commonly 10, 15, 20, or 30 years. It is often considered for temporary needs such as income replacement while children are young or the remaining years of a mortgage.

  • Premiums are often lower initially than comparable permanent coverage.
  • Most term policies do not build cash value.
  • Coverage may expire at the end of the term.
  • Renewal may be available at a substantially higher premium.
  • Some contracts include a conversion option, subject to deadlines and policy rules.

Permanent Life Insurance

Permanent policies are designed for long-term or lifetime coverage when adequately funded and maintained. They may include cash value and may cost more than term coverage for the same initial death benefit.

Common Types

  • Whole life: typically includes contractual guarantees and a structured premium schedule.
  • Universal life: offers flexible elements, but policy charges and credited interest can affect how much funding is needed.
  • Indexed universal life: credits interest under a policy formula linked to an external index; it does not directly invest the cash value in that index.

Which Is Better?

Neither category is automatically better. Term may fit a large temporary need and a limited budget. Permanent insurance may fit lifelong needs, estate or legacy goals, future insurability concerns, or a desire for cash-value features. Some families use both.

Questions to Ask

  • How long does the financial need last?
  • What premium can remain affordable during difficult years?
  • Which values or premiums are guaranteed?
  • What happens when the term ends?
  • Is conversion available, and until what date?
  • For permanent coverage, what can cause the policy to lapse?
